Checklist

Mediation preparation checklist

4 April 2026Telo Family Law

A structured checklist to help prepare for mediation with more clarity, focus and practical readiness.

A practical version you can actually use

This checklist is designed to help you prepare with more structure and less pressure. You do not need every item. Use it to identify what you already have, what still needs attention, and what may be useful to raise in the next step.

Purpose of the mediation

Start by clarifying what this mediation is actually for.

Information and documents

Bring only what is useful, but make sure the core material is ready.

Dates and timing

Timing can shape both leverage and practicality.

Negotiation priorities

Think in layers rather than a single fixed position.

Practical preparation

Prepare for the process as well as the substance.

Important timing note

Timing can materially affect family law matters. If financial issues remain unresolved, married parties generally need to commence financial or property proceedings within 12 months after a divorce takes effect, and de facto parties generally need to commence within two years of breakdown.

This material is general in nature and is not a substitute for tailored legal advice.
